New Rules For 2005 Season

NFL Officials were in San Diego late last week reviewing new rule changes for the 2005-06 season... so from the official web site of the San Diego Chargers (chargers.com) here they are:

The following rules were also highly emphasized in the meeting which will be in effect for the 2005 season:

  • If a defensive foul is a dead ball personal foul following the end of the second or fourth quarter, the offensive team may choose to extend the period for one untimed down.
  • “Peel-back” blocks by offensive linemen are now 15-yard penalties and may be means for a possible fine. If a blocker drifts outside the tackle-to-tackle box and then comes back in on the side of a defender's knee, the player will be penalized.
  • Hits on opponents away from the play is cause for unnecessary roughness
  • An illegal touching foul committed by a player on the kicking team inside the 15 yard line can result in a touchback if receiving team elects to do so. This rule was proposed by the Chargers following an incident that took place in their Wild Card game against the Jets.
