Chargers Issue Gates Ultimatum

So the Charger front office has set a deadline for holdout, All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates. If Gates does not report and sign a contract by 12:30 PM on Saturday the Chargers are prepared to suspend him through at least the first regular season game. They are using the rationale that the staff needs to know who their tight ends will be once the season starts.

I have two comments regarding this matter...first, I know who the Chargers should have as their starting tight end... Antonio Gates. To supsend or not allow him to play is not a smart move. Second, this move is being seen as a method to accellerate contract talks, which hopefully will encourage a conclusion to the talks, but if things don't get agreed upon and turn ugly, the Chargers may have just lost or disgruntled one of their best players...which won't be good for the team...

makes this charger fan wonder if a.j. smith is becoming too used to getting his way...starting to see a pattern of "it's my way or the highway" attitude from him.
