I've been meaning to get a post about how much I don't like Bruce Springsteen and how much he sucks up sooner ... since he was announced as the Super Bowl Halftime act this year ... and am just getting it in before the 'wire'.
Yes, "The Boss" is this year's Super Bowl halftime act and as is my tradition for every Super Bowl I have ever watched, I will not watch one second of the halftime act. Furthermore, without watching Bruce perform, I can safely say that his show will suck because he sucks.
Is there really anyone in the music industry that is labeled as a 'legend' and sucks more than him? It would be tough to come by but I am definately open to those suggestions.
I think "Born In The USA" came out when I was like 12 or 13 and sure, I was entertained at that time but it only took a couple of listens of that song to see how much it really sucks and how it became popular is probably more due to the 'message' than the music. And what is the 'message' of that song? Well, duh, it is simply "Born In The USA" ... for you see, the entire lyrics to that song is one chorus that references the gas fires down by the refinery and then repeat "Born In The USA" for the remainder of the song ... pure musical genius is Bruce. His other 'hits' or probably not hits, just songs by him that I can recall being played somewhere at sometime include something like 159 channels and nothing on, Pink Cadillac, Tunnel Of Love and Ghost Of Tom Joad ... all crap, crappier and crappier.
What really gets me, is how someone is able to get away with essentially putting out this garbage and being seen as a "Rock Legend" or even a "Rocker" of any sort. Obviously Bruce has a great P.R. department and maybe some other tricks that have idiots think his music is awesome, but it is probably more that his music is so stupidly simple that the droves of simpletons in the world flock to him like a bug-zapper.

Actually, I think a lot about "the boss" sucks, but the lyrics of Born in the USA are kind of cool. I suppose I was about the same age as you then and didn't get the full meaning. But I am older now and understand what this country went through due to the war in Vietnam. Just read the lyrics as the person before said. It makes sense. The whole culture of the 1980s is full of Vietnam references and how it was still affecting things. Think "The A-Team" for example. It's all there. Anyway, I agree but still none the less...
Great lyrics don't make great songs perse, and Springsteen - and Dylan for that matter- is the perfect example for this. Otherwise we could hear some great writers sing great songs, but gladly we don't.
I never understood that Bruce Springsteen is called a "rock fenomena", either. Saying that he "rocks" is the same statement that Mickey Mouse is a sexsymbol. Come on, people, it's much to wimpy for rock.
Saw a show the other day on tv, and allthough I didn't like the music, I wondered why Bruce is that great, so I really tried to give it a chance by watching this show, and....
..it was pathetic. The only member of the e-street band having a good time was the drummer and the Boss. The rest were playing with one foot in the grave allready, like some underpaid mercenaries. So much for rock and rock.

I think he has good things to say, but I do agree that his voice sounds a lot like a constipated donkey. I'm trying to learn to sing myself and I suck at it, but listening to the Boss lay it down with passion despite his obviously fecal voice actually helps me feel better about myself! If only he was coming up in more modern times they could have auto-tuned him or something.

Douche Springsteen had his time. But like bubblegum rock of the 60's, his time has long passed. His lyrics and music were trite, and his songs do not stand up well. He is best relegated to Oldies stations; so we can listen and 'remember when'. He also cultivated his image as a working class hero, but is just a poser. And now he suffers from 'rich man's guilt'. I was a huge Springsteen fan back in the 1970s and early 1980s. I left
when "Born in the USA" came out and he became huge. I think I just grew up
and did not need his music anymore. Some of my friends went on this ride with him their whole lives even taking their children to his concerts.
I do not hate him or love him. I realize he is a person period just like all of us. I just choose not to worship or hate idols.
